Background

The initial set of LonMark profiles, published in the LonMark Interoperability Guidelines provided a basic set of generic functions (open and closed -loop sensors and actuators, and a controller) from which a broad set of applications could be implemented.

Input and output data types were intentionally left open to interpretation according to the particular application. LonMark members, working within application-specific task groups, have since gone ahead and defined the data types and associated configuration properties to arrive at new, application-specific functional definitions described by the new Functional Profiles.

LonMark Functional profiles describe in detail the application-layer interface—including the network variables, configuration properties, defaults, and power-up behaviors—required on LonMark devices for specific, commonly used control functions.

Profiles standardize functions not products, Profiles give industry groups a universal shorthand in which to describe common units of functional behavior. This shorthand eases the specfication process and enhances interoperability—without compromising a specifier's ability to call for unique capabilities, or a manufacturer's ability to differentiate a product from the competition.

A product must be based on one or more profiles (including one of the initial four: open-loop sensor, closed-loop sensor, open-loop actuator, and/or closed-loop actuator) if it is to be certified to the LonMark Interoperability Guidelines.

LonMark members can use the Member Forum for all up-to-date draft Profile documents. Below are the published functional profiles completed to-date.
